What Makes It Great for Kids

Free Family Programs:
Hoyt offers FREE nature programs for kids throughout the year. Their "Tree Time!" preschool walks (ages 2-6) happen every Monday and Saturday morning, where a naturalist leads kids on gentle exploration walks. In summer, they run free drop-in programs Thursday through Saturday. They also have Discovery Packs you can borrow from the Visitor Center - backpacks loaded with tools like magnifying glasses, field guides, and activity sheets to make your visit more interactive.

Easy Trailways:
The trails here are perfect for families with all ages. You've got everything from easy paved paths (great for strollers and little legs) to more adventurous dirt trails that wind through the forest. The real magic is that it never feels crowded - even on busy weekends, you can find quiet spots where it feels like you have the whole forest to yourselves.

What Parents Should Know

The Visitor Center (open 10am-4pm daily) has clean restrooms, free trail maps, and a small gift shop. Parking can fill up on nice weekend mornings, but there's usually space if you arrive before 11am or after 2pm. The trails are open 5am-10pm every day, so early morning or evening walks are an option too.

Pro Tips from Our Visit

  • 💡Grab the free Children's Adventure Map at the Visitor Center (or download it from their website) - it turns your visit into a scavenger hunt with special trees and features to find. Kids stay way more engaged when they're looking for the "tallest tree" or the "witch's broom."

Full Description

Grab the kids and take a hike! A living museum of trees where kids can explore 12 miles of trails through forests from around the world, Hoyt Arboretum is one of Portland's hidden gems for families with 190 acres of ridge-top forest including over 2,300 different species of trees from six continents, all just minutes from downtown. Think of it as a massive outdoor classroom where kids can see giant redwoods, exotic magnolias, and towering Douglas firs all in one place. Kids love the variety. One minute you're walking under towering coast redwoods that make you feel tiny, the next you're in a grove of Japanese maples or checking out the magnolia collection. There's always something blooming, changing color, or dropping interesting seed pods depending on the season. Bring snacks - there's no food available on-site, but plenty of benches and spots to stop for a picnic. The trails are well-maintained but still natural (roots, uneven surfaces), so wear real shoes, not sandals. After rain, some trails get muddy. Best for: Families who want a real forest experience without driving out of the city Kids who love nature, trees, and exploring Rainy days (the tree canopy provides some cover, though trails get muddy) Teaching kids about trees and biodiversity in a hands-on way Getting some exercise without it feeling like a hike Ages: All ages work here. Toddlers can handle the paved trails, elementary kids love the longer loops, and even teenagers appreciate how peaceful it is. The variety means everyone finds something interesting.
